Canadian flag symbol trademarked by government

If you are a Canadian and want to display your flag on your website you’re going to have to be pretty careful about how you do it. A Canadian smoker’s rights group has been told to remove the flag symbol from their website due to the fact that some people may take it to be a government sponsored organization.

Shawn Dearn, a spokesman for the Federal Identity Program, denied his agency singled out Forces Canada, whose efforts are directed in large part against the federal government’s anti-smoking education programs.

Oh, really? I wonder if we can find any Canadian anti-smoking sites that are displaying the flag symbol?

One more thing that this brings up, though. Does a country’s flag belong to the country’s government or to the country’s people?
