Belgium rules Sharon can be tried

Talk about arrogance, Belgium has decided that they have jurisdiction over war criminals regardless of where those crimes ocurred and even regardless of whether or not the defendant has ever even been in Belgium.

Belgium’s highest appeals court has ruled that Ariel Sharon could face war crime charges after he leaves office. This decision was in response to an appeal by a group of Palestinian survivors of a massacre in Lebanon over 20 years ago. You see, Belgium has this universal jurisdiction law which allows for the prosecution of alleged war crimes no matter where they took place.

Now, Ariel Sharon may well deserve facing these charges but how is it that Belgium has decided that they have jurisdiction?
