Last week a limb broke lose from a tree during a heavy storm, fell on a car and killed a man here in Atlanta. Last night a 70 ft. 100+ year old tree uprooted during another storm falling on a car killing a mother and her two young sons. The woman’s husband was driving the car at the time and was unhurt.
There has been five years of drought in this area prior to this year and I think the rainfall deficit has been made up for that time in just the last four months. This is having a terrible effect on our old hardwood trees. Trees that look rock solid are setting on deteriorated rootballs. Limbs, brittle from five years of drought are soaking up an enormous amount of water and the limbs can no longer sustain that much weight in water.
