Rain, cold weather and running

I’ve been trying to get myself back in shape. After several months of walking my dog on multi-mile walks I finally got my knee strengthened up enough to run on it with a knee brace. After a couple of weeks with the knee brace it is now strong enough to run without it.

I’ve been making progress.

A big part of that progress has been due to my sticking with my training plan and at least doing a portion of each days plan. This has worked fine until this morning. Winter has finally set in with a cold and rainy day. I can’t motivate myself to get out and do the 20-25 minutes of running that I really need to do today.

My worry is that this early into my training any deviation from my plan will destroy my committment by giving me a precedent for not following through with my plan any time there is something in my way of completing the days plan. Habits are formed through repitition.

I’ll run this afternoon when the rain lessens.

About Larry D. Burton

I'm a 55 year old controls engineer who just likes tinkering with stuff. Finished high school at a local institute of learning. Decided it wasn't a good time to be a healthy, physically fit 18 year old with no college experience. Entered college and started working toward a degree in animal husbandry. 1975-1976 Discoverd that I was not going to be a very good husband of animals so I left school to figure out what I might be good at. A local beverage company took pity on me and paid me to go from place to place making sure their on tap beverages were maintaining their high quality. 1976-1979 Got out of quality control and into vending. Learned about control systems and refrigeration also learned that vending machines are heavy and vending doesn't pay all that well. In 1977 I found myself married 1979-1981 Dedicated myself to installing and maintaining commercial refrigeration equipment. Found myself on the roof of a local grocery store one night in the middle of an ice storm replacing a compressor and figured it was time to get back into school. 1981-1986 Got my but back into school at night and changed jobs to keep the mechanical and electrical systems of a local coporate hospital in working order. The job expanded to unstopping drains and burning lab samples and amputated body parts. 1986-now Finished school and took on a job designing, installing and maintaining industrial control systems. Along the way I picked up a bunch of computer skills that became very useful connecting various industrial controllers to one another and moving the data into coporate databases. I now operate Dallas Bay Technologies, a one man shop specializing in technology solutions for industrial problems.

  1. Don't be too hard on yourself! You're doing great. And remember… you're in this for the long haul, not just to get you to your goal. You're making a lifestyle change… and one day out of your routine won't make or break that. You'll toughen up and one day LOVE running even in the rain! : )

Being hard on myself is what got me this far. I love the running but this weather always puts me in a funk and then all I feel like doing is crawling into bed and reading, watch tv or sleep. I have to develop a habit. I intend to be running in a marathon on or around my 60th birthday. :) Thanks for your pep talk. I'm out the door now to try to run for a while.

The weather wasn't near as bad as it seemed once I started running and that mile seemed a lot shorter. Someone must be moving the mileposts closer together.

  4. : )…. that's a good sign!
