Presidential Fish

Some of you may remember the “snail darter”, the endangered little fish that was used in an attempt to shut down the construction of the Clinch River Breeder Reactor back in the late 70s and early 80s. Well, the snail darter isn’t the only species of darters found in American waterways and five new have been found.

Five new species of colourful, freshwater fish called darters have been discovered in river drainages in eastern North America and named after four Presidents and a Vice. Darters are the smallest members of the perch family, and are named after their ability to zip around, under and into rocks and sediment on the beds of clean, fast-moving waterways.

The choice of all Democrats for the honor seems suspicious to me but I guess Eisenhower, Nixon, Ford, Reagan and both Bushes really don’t fit as fish people. Although I always thought there was something fishy about Nixon. ;)
