This is troubling. The Obama administration, through the NSA, has been collecting all of the transactional data on phone calls from Verizon since April 25th and will continue to collect this data for at least a couple of months. This isn’t just foreign calls being made into the US, this is ALL phone call data. What is being said or texted isn’t included but this is grabbing from number, to number, length of call, location information of the two phones involved and anything else being collected.
Privacy advocates have long warned that allowing the government to collect and store unlimited “metadata” is a highly invasive form of surveillance of citizens communications activities. Those records enable the government to know the identity of every person with whom an individual communicates electronically, how long they spoke, and their location at the time of the communication.
What do they want with this data?
