As we find out more and more about the health benefits of all the foods we once demonized a study out is pointing out canola oil having a possible link to dementia. I think the study even found another important point of impact on our health.
After observing the animals for 12 months, they weighed them. They found that the mice on the canola oil diet weighed significantly more than those on a regular diet.
Not a whole lot is made of this paragraph in the article but with our epidemic of obesity I would have liked to see this fact addressed a little more.
But regarding the article as a whole we need to take the closing paragraph to heart:
“Even though canola oil is a vegetable oil, we need to be careful before we say that it is healthy,” lead researcher Domenico Pratico. “Based on the evidence from this study, canola oil should not be thought of as being equivalent to oils with proven health benefits.”
Other than olive oil I can’t think of one plant based oil that can be considered healthy.
