More on School bans Declaration of Independence

In a comment to the original post Dan points us to the Steven’s Creek Parents website. Yeah, there really is more to the story.

Neil Gaiman Reports Will Eisner’s Passing

Will Eisner, the man who gave Jack Kirby his start is dead at the age of 87. Neil Gaiman tells a little of what Eisner meant to him.

I was woken up this morning, with the news that Will had died last night, aged 87, and I’ve let a few friends know, and already had to speak to one journalist about who Will was and what he did (”It’s as if Orson Welles had made Citizen Kane and redefined what you could do in film, and then carried on making movies until now,” I said, wishing I could come up with a better analogy, and knowing that that didn’t explain it. And I didn’t mention how proud he was of any of us who did good comics — how much he cared about the medium — or how glad I am that I got to tell him that I wouldn’t have written comics if it wasn’t for him. There’s a reason that the Oscars of comics are the Eisner Awards.)

Eisner created the graphic novel that Gaiman has done so well with.

Written Up in InControl

For those of you who are curious about what I really do for a living InControl did a write up on my company and on a project that I had a minor role in. The ArmorStarts featured in the article really were instrumental in our getting the project completed on time.

Clear Channel “Breast Christmas Ever” Contest Draws Fire

I’m not a huge fan of breast augmentation. I’ve known some women that have benefitted from the surgery but then I’ve known some women that I thought actually were more appealing before the surgery. Still, I’ve got to question NOW’s objection to a breast enlargement contest.

In the “Breast Christmas Ever” contest, 13 women were awarded the procedure after writing essays to the stations explaining why they wanted larger breasts. A Tampa station claimed to receive more than 91,000 entries.

More than ninty-one thousand women voluntarily sent in entries to this contest and these entries weren’t just post cards with the entrants name and address, these were essays written by these women seeking to win the surgery.

While I’m willing to concede that there were probably a few hundred women willing to write an essay about why they deserved to be given bigger boobs for Christmas on a whim I hardly would think that 91,000 women would be so cavalier about such a thing. These women saw nothing wrong with the contest and, in fact, supported this contest with their entries. Where do the people at NOW get off protesting this contest?

I think this comes under the heading of straining at a gnat and swallowing a camel. There are so many other issues that NOW could be legitimately protesting and probably are. The problem with their protesting this issue is that it takes away from their credibility on other issues. NOW needs to pick their fights a little better.

Al-Zarqawi arrested?

It appears that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi may have been arrested. It’s curious that at this time (01/04/2004 10:46 AM EST) there is no word about this in US news sources.

Plan to Keep Detainees in Jail for Life Criticized by Senators

You knew it was going to happen. All those supposed terrorist being detained down at Gitmo are going to have to have some sort of final dispostion decided for them by the US. It appears that some pentagon and intelligence officials feel that they need to be kept incarcerated for the rest of their lives even when there isn’t enough evidence to bring them to trial. Luckily, a couple of US Senators in high places recognize the fact that our constitution doesn’t allow for that.

Happy New Year

Okay, I know I’m a few days late but I’ve been busy.

I’m adding Google’s AdSense back to this weblog. I don’t expect to get any money from it but I’m amused with some of the ads that get targeted to this site. If something appeals to you please click through.

Right now I’m in the middle of writing down the way I see my religious beliefs evolved. I’m doing this as for myself to try to get a grip on how I came about my current belief system and to also try to understand exactly what my current belief system is. I’ll probably be sharing at least excerpts of the final document here sometime this month.

At work I’m starting the new year off reporting to a new boss. I’ve been working with him as a resource for his projects for the past nine months but reporting to someone else. There is also project beginning in a couple of weeks that should prove interesting. From what I understand about it so far it should be about a year long project. This will be the first time at this company that I’ve been involved with a project from the very beginning. I’ve been stepping into other folks shoes up until now and some of those shoes were a little stinky.

I’m attempting to get myself back in shape. My shoulder is healing well and it shouldn’t be much longer before I’m allowed to lift more than five pounds over my head. I started out this weekend riding my bicycle and I’m embarrased with my current state of conditioning. I must get rid of this gut and build my stamina back up.

That’s about it for my ramblings today. Hopefully I will fill this weblog up with some interesting things this year but today appears not to be when it is going to start.
