HyperText Transfer Protocol

It seems that a lot of people don’t know why we type HTTP when we begin a URL. It tells the browser the protocol to use to retrieve the information. HTTP is the HyperText Transfer Protocol. Another you will see used is FTP or File Transfer Protocol.

    Just in case you are curious about what prompted this post. It seems that if you mung the URL by, say, leaving out the colon you go to Microsoft’s website. Try copying http//weblog.larrydburton.com into your address bar and see where it takes you.
