Oh Happy Day

I was sitting in my hotel room this morning, listening to the noon news, waiting for my time to go into a 1430-0030 shift at my customer’s plant. I sort of heard a health report that suddenly had me listening intently. Researchers are involved in human trials for a gene therapy treatment for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. The TV news report sounded promising so I went Googling for more news on the subject. There isn’t just one human trial going on, there are two. One of the trials appears especially promising. Hopefully this dreaded disease can be treated and those afflicted can lead normal lives. Maybe even a cure could come from this.

Now, you may be wondering why this caught my interest over all the other advances occuring in medicine. Well, I had three uncles with Becker MD, a varient of Duchenne MD. I have three cousins with BMD.

DMD and BMD were not well understood when I was born. When I was around eight it was understood well enough that I was screened for the disease along with my brother. I dodged the bullet. My cousins didn’t. This may give them an opportunity for a more normal life.
