Some things I believe
March 22nd, 2007 by Larry D. Burton
There are some things I believe.
- I believe in the Big Bang theory in that the universe exploded into being from a singularity.
- I believe that all life on earth evolved into what it is now from a primordial soup over millions of years.
- I believe that all the universe and all that is in it came into being at the guidance of some kind of intelligence.
- I believe that intelligence is God.
- I believe that along with creating the universe God also created an ideal way of living.
- I believe that the most precious gift God gave us was free will.
- I believe that this ideal way of living is something that you and I can choose to live or we can choose our own way of living.
- I believe that it is God’s will that we choose His ideal way of living.
- I believe that we all are searching for God’s ideal way of living and that this search has manifested itself into all the major religions of the world.
- I believe that God works his Will through all of these religions.
- I believe that Jesus perfectly represented God’s ideal way of living.
- I believe that every religion has been perverted by people trying to use religion to control others.
These are some of the things I believe. I’ve tried to put these in essay form but I can’t. It seems a list is the only way I can express them. I have more to add to this list but it’s getting late. I’ll save those items for a later post.

I can agree with every one of the elements of your credo. Too inclusive for most mainline churches, but that is their problem.
I like a big tent for my beliefs, a church that will mainly let you alone on matters of personal belief.
One of the reasons that I’ve remained a Methodist all these years is that the denomination is fairly inclusive. If you can recite the Apostle’s Creed and find some way to agree with the entire creed then you’ve gotten the absolutes out of the way. The rest we’ll discuss and debate and agree to disagree over.
How quickly we forget. Having been a Methodist for my adolescent and the majority of my Adult life I’m a bit embarrased to admit that I had to google that.
My wife and I tried the entireity (sp?) of the Methodist churches when we moved, only to be dissapointed by one thing or another (Minister stepping down due to in-appropriate behavior with a secretary being the biggest) we finally settled in a “Christian Church” which is non-denominational (sp?).
Other things we don’t do…
- pray the lords prayer (unless it’s a special event)
- Sing the trinity (another thing I’ve forgotten) during the offetory processional.
- Stand up, sit down, stand up, sit down during the service (I admit, I don’t miss this).
- Ash Wednesday
- Sunrise Service
All of these customs that I’ve listed, I don’t think make the church any better or worse. Which is why we call this our church home.
I liked your list. I agreed with every bit of it. I was surprised. I expected there to be some point of contention. I hope you are well.
